The strainer is there to catch any bigger debrees. As far as a fuel gauge, there is no simple way to put one on a Shadow because of the design of the fuel tank. You can replace the petcock with a Pingel petcock.The Shadow Spirit 750 has a very low seat height, something on the order of 26", so it is very easy for the new rider to feel comfortable and confident. The Shadow Spirit 750 does have a chain drive, so it does require a bit more maintenance than a belt or shaft drive. I am an engineer, so pretty comfortable with basic maintenance on my own.

I use some grease or Armor-all on a Q-tip for this. You can also heat up the fuel line with a heat gun/hair drier to soften it too.
